Hey guys. Hope everyone is feeling alright.

I'm obviously a fan of the Doors and a song which always moves me is The End. Call it commercial or whatever but it's best defined as a LSD trip. The song is a trip.

I think on the live versions the Doors really shine when they play this song. It's almost ritualistic. I was being abit naughty and downloaded a torrent of all the live versions including Detroit, Aquarius theater and bunch more. I really like the version of the End on the Detroit album and the version on the 'Essential Rarities' album. I also like the versions in the matrix.

Can you guys recommend some more live versions of the End. Can someone please post videos or pictures of Detroit or the ER album. I'll appreciate it. Thanks.

I do apologize for the poor grammar and spelling. Blame this awesome European haze wink.gif

There is no way that "The End" can be considered commercial and in fact it's the opposite,I don't know what your trip is Valhalla but if you want to provoke or make fun at, or you have a problem with authority figures take it to your own personal experience and fight your demons and parents on your own grounds.I suppose they'll let you undercut people here and diminish what The Doors are with your backwards falsehoods. We are a community of people and I'd like you to be part of this man but please come off the horse and make like a mortal soul.Tim

I mean, come on, smile back atr least you know.. smoke weed.. you know..

Jim didn't smoke marijuana, btw. He had a bad experience with it, and never tried it again.
    Salli
I know it's popular to say to Jim smoked grass during the vacation he and the other Doors took after the Miami concert and Jim never smoked it again, but I saw Jim smoke grass in October 1970. It was cured in opium and Babe Hill got it for him. It was just once and Jim was not at his best while under its influence. He never smoked it around me again. As to whether he smoked it later than October 1970 or not or with someone else I have no idea.
    thevalhalla
Ofcourse Jim smoked pot! Mewsical I don't know where the hell you get your statements from. Ray has said countless times that they were potheads and so have the other doors. It's obvious too. Come on. Jim just smoked less afterwards because he was rich enough to get his hands on the real things. AM I TRIPPING OR DID SALLI'S POST JUST CHANGE! SHE HAS MAGICAL POWERS.

Hey, Jim probably smoked pot after Oct. 70 but probably didn't smoke the reefer cured in opium. I am a fan of dope but I know my limits and I never mix more than 2 drugs (alcohol not included)

I have never captured a quote where John Densmore spoke about drug use other than when giving an explaination of his time with the Doors, past tense.

Ray on the other hand, we know advocates the use of LSD and on a few occassions Ecstasy . A majority of these interviews were conducted during the publicty phase of the tribute act from 2002-2006. It's a fact that Ray advocates specific brands of drugs but has admitted that he doesn't take drugs himself.

Melbourne Herald Sun News - December 5 2004
    ENTERTAINMENT Ray Manzarek.
    Rocker advice off the planet
    By NUI TE KOHA
    05dec04

AUTHORITIES have blasted a legendary rocker who advocates the use of
    psychedelic drugs.

Ray Manzarek, 60, touring with rock act The Doors of the 21st
Century in February, says critics of the drug culture have it wrong.
He criticised heroin, cocaine and crystal meth, but Manzarek
admitted a soft spot for ecstasy and supports using psychedelics.

"Back in the 1960s, drug culture was consciousness expansion,"
    Manzarek said.

"Ecstasy - I've never taken it - but it gives you a nice high and
you feel warm and loving towards your fellow man. Well, that's the
point of it: opening the doors of perception.

"You also do that through psychedelics. You cannot do that through
crystal meth or strange, crystalline white powders. Crystal meth is
the worst drug you could possibly take.

"So, my advice? Take psychedelics. Why not? There are mushrooms
growing, LSD was created by a doctor.

"Psychedelics are what you should take.

"They will open the doors to perception and you will see things as
    they are -- infinite."

But Australian Drug Foundation CEO Bill Stronach said Manzarek was
talking nonsense and sending a dangerous message.

"Taking any drug has risks and clearly with LSD and hallucinogens
there are significant risks attached," he said.

"It's a dangerous message if people take it on board and act on it.
They could place themselves in serious risk."

He said the best thing for parents wary of their children taking
drugs was to talk about it.

"They need to be prepared to talk about the issue of drug use openly
and be able to make their children aware of the serious risks
    associated with drug use."

National Drug and Alcohol Research Council info manager Paul Dillon
    said Manzarek's advice was misguided.

"There is a perception that naturally occurring hallucinogens like
mushrooms are not problematic," Mr Dillon said. "The reality is
naturally occurring drugs can be more potent for some people. And to
say LSD is OK because a doctor invented it is bizarre."

Ex-Doors' member to share stories, songs
    The Union News
    By Dave Moller
    March 4, 2006

Ray Manzarek promises the music will be your special friend when the former keyboardist for The Doors plays with slide guitarist Roy Rogers here Saturday night.

The unabashed Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame inductee also promises some great stories.

"We'll be talking about psychedelics, man, God and existence," Manzarek said from his Napa Valley home Friday. "We'll be discussing The Doors and their relationship to sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll and that the rapture will never happen, so be forewarned, beware and come at your own risk."

Manzarek said he will dip into his vast repertoire of songs gathered since he played with Jim Morrison, Robbie Kreiger and John Densmore in one of the most famous rock bands ever. Manzarek said he might play one Doors song, "and if the audience is good, perhaps two."

In between tunes those attending will hear about "The wild and crazy Doors, the stories we all want to hear."

Manzarek said he will play piano and will not bring the Vox Continental organ he made famous in tunes like "Light My Fire" and "The End" during The Doors' turbulent and prolific run that started in the mid-'60s and ended with Morrison's death in 1971.

Concert goers will find out that Manzarek does not have long hair and mutton chops anymore, as well.

"Nor do I still smoke pot or take LSD," Manzarek said. "But if you fear LSD, run away fast. Dick Cheney should not come (to the concert)."

Ray did avocate drug use during the celebration of Jims Birthday at Barney's Dec 8 2008, and prior to that date Ray did give an interview on Nov 18 2008 to the Drug Truth Network where he spoke about drug use within the context of The Doors as a band.

Norman Mailer said when talking about alcohol "Each time I drink and go into my mind to retouch my masterpiece I find it has changed". Depending on the day alcohol and drugs act different on individuals, I've had a friend who smoked one joint and became schizophrenic, never to return to a normal state again, sad but the chemistry of his brain was fragile.Morrison was quoted and I think i'm close on the quote"Drugs are a gamble with your mind" so at least know when your experimenting you really are gambling, things could go either way, good, bad,or insane.

Why does it always seems like Ray can see every which way to make more $$$?
    PTLWP
Ray came from humble beginnings and he tries to make up for not having much in his early life by making as big a haul financially as he can in the here and now and in the present day.

Some people get that way and some don't. Most never get the chance to find out. wink.gif
    MeagerFood521
Ray had some kind of influence over Jim....could never figure out what it was.
In Jim's later years Ray himself could see Jim falling apart, yet, pushed him harder and harder surely knowing Jim was not well, until the last dollar from Jim's very soul was not forthcoming.
Believe me, Ray could have taken that if he could.
Sure Jim gave us his all and Ray probably thought wow, this great, we are at the top and no one can touch us now.
In the interim, Ray's concentration and obsession with the almighy dollar left no one to notice or even give a shit about Jim's rapid deteriation with the exception of John Densmore, and Pamela Courson. Robbie's head was up in the clouds somewhere; and Robbie's wife could care less as long as the $$$$$$ was coming in.
A Great, Great band...an exceptional artist...one we will never see again in our lifetime...sadly met his death because no one really cared about Jim himself.

Good post, J! Addresses the issue of nobody seeming to care about what was happening to Jim, the "golden goose." I think John did care, but was conflicted at the time. Pam certainly cared, as did others around Jim, but not the ones who mattered most to him, who had benefited the most from his work. His fellow band members.

What is it that you want to know? The End was improvised many times at the various shows. Here's a couple of examples.

I saw Ray in Philadelphia at the Tin Angel with Mike McClure reading poetry, just before all the ROTS and Doors goings on started. I always had wished that Ray had stayed with playing in small venues with McClure or some such thing.

He was very good by himself, with McClure reading some poetry and he was making an honest dollar, not like what happened when the whole ROTS thing turned into a dog and pony show and a federal case, at that.
