Alright, I'm going to start a stupid little topic here because I just made a post that got me thinking.  Name all the songs (rock and roll - not Tommy Dorsey or Glen Campbell, etc) with a drum intro.   It's kind of interesting if you think of all the variations as well as just how many songs start w/ a drum intro.  Let's see (memory here).........The Doors had "Break On Through", "Hello I Love You", "Five To One", "I Talked To You", and of course the crack from hell on "Light My Fire".     I've always thought the opening beat to "Swing Town" by Steve Miller was a pretty cool little riff.  Anyway, there are a million of them out there.  Name em........you got nothing better to do.

Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin

Now I hate that song (and them) thanks to them being big old whores.

Hot For Teacher - Van Halen

Only decent song they ever did.

Radar Love - Golden Earring

Okay, there's a bass in there, so sue me. It sticks in your head though.

Shake Your Money Maker- Paul Butterfield Blues Band- 2 quick hits

Whats Going On by Marvin Gaye- Hand drums enter over party conversation- This is such a beautiful album.

Garden Grove- Sublime

IPB Image
This is where John got the beat to Break On Through . The album was released in April of 1962, drummer Ben Riley was one of the first to use the latin beat in be- bop.

The first song on the album is If Ever I Would Leave You , it lasts for 11:58. It sounds exactly like what John Densmore plays.

Of course I love the into to break on through. I also love VH HFT intro. I love the groove to the beggining of take 5 from the Dave Brubeck quartet featuring Joe Morello. The crunge from Zeppelin is cool too.

Hey, what a great topic..well you've already covered the Doorss stuff pretty much..let's see here, a few that pop into my head:

"Call Me The Breeze"..JJ Cale.. Actually starts with an old drum machine box, the kind that came with organs sold to homeowners.

Do It Again..Steely Dan, nice combination of drums set, conga, and other hand percussion

"Keep On Dancing"  The Gentrys.. A Pretty wimpy record, but I rememember seeing the band perform it on Hullabuloo in '65 or was it Shindig?

"Wipe Out"  The Surfaris and a little later The Ventures. I always liked the Ventures live version with Mel Taylor behind the kit.

"Walk, Don't Run"  The Ventures

"Frankenstein"and  "Cool Fool" Edgar Winter Group/White Trash

"Pretty Woman"  Roy Orbison.. This one well warn into the ground, but I loved it in '64

"Don't Worry Baby" The Beach Boys,  Hal Blaine played just some simple quarter notes to open the song, but so identifiable.

"Be My Baby" The Ronnettes.. Hal Blaine again

"Let's Dance" Chris Montez (probably Hal B. not sure)

"Somethin Else" Eddie Cochran  (Eddie was truly one of Rock And Rolls true grearts who left way too early)

"A Town Without Pity" Gene Pitney  A simple but very effective snare drum into

"Fortunate Son" CCR

"Rain" The Beatles ...Simple but effective. Ringo rules.

"Let's Stomp"  Bobby Comstock ...an early sixties rocker!

"Baby I Need Your Loving" Four Tops

"Ain't That A Shame"  Cheap Trick Version

"It Must Be Love"  Iron Butterfly  I can't help it, I still love these guys, especially the abum "BALL" from which this track was from.

"Not Fade Away"... The Dead off their second live album and so many other versions.

"Like A Rolling Stone"  Bob Dylan

"Rock Me" by Steppenwolf...This one certainly was influenced by "Light My Fire"  The Late Jerry Edmonton, a founding member of Steppenwolf is one of the most underated drummers in the sixties and seventies rock era.  I still love listening to his work.

OK back to work now!

I started the same topic over at Drumzilla's Lair on Yahoo Groups. Here are some of the answers posted there:

Ain't Too Proud To Beg--Temps, Pistol Allen on drums I think
Ant Music... Adam and the Ants  (I thought this was called Goodie Two-Shoes)
When The Levee Breaks
Sunday Bloddy Sunday
Wooden Jesus (???)
Honky Tonk Women
We're An American Band
Hawaii Five-O
Moby Dick
D'Yer Maker
50 ways to leave yer lover
Living Wreck (Deep Purple)

and (John will like this one)...drumroll please:

"Part 3 Pursuance" from Coltrain's "A Love Supreme" Elvin Jones on drums...

Nice list onemat.   Hawaii Five-O of course!  The visuals they would have while the song was playing helped cement it's "coolness" factor.

Great topic, guys

the only songs that come to my mind right now is The Sheriff by Emerson Lake and Palmer and Multinationals bite by Fischer-Z.
but I'm gonna remember a lot more I'm sure.
for those who don't know the song click here to listen to The Sheriff drum intro.

- it's a little generosity from Miss Moon but later I'll have to delete it alright? I need the storage space on my website

and of course the crack from hell on "Light My Fire".

Ha! It's only a 'crack' but I love that one!  biggrin.gif
Maybe When the music is over is in this category too? I love the growing tension and then 'ratatata'. I specially like the hollywood bowl version, Ray keeps one key pressed, very annoying and John is back there just 'feeling the vibe', shaking, Jim is distracted walking around and almost misses his cue.
