Members of The Doors honour Jim Morrison on 40th anniversary of his death Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek light candles at late singer's Paris grave

The Doors late frontman Jim Morrison has been honoured by two of his former bandmates on the 40th anniversary of his death today (July 3).

Keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger visited the singer's grave in Paris to light candles in his memory, reports Associated Press.

They were joined at the Pere Lachaise cemetery by a group of Morrison's fans, who laid flowers while wearing t-shirts bearing the words "40th anniversary".

The grave has long been a pilgrimage site for his fans.

Morrison died in 1971 in the French capital, with the cause of death believed to have been a drug overdose.

However, there are many theories surrounding his death, with some fans believing he faked his demise and is still alive today.

Pick up next week's issue of NME, available on newsstands and digitally from Wednesday (July 6), for more on the 40th anniversary of Morrison's death.

Jim Morrison Died 40 Years Ago: The Doors singer was found unresponsive in a bathtub in Paris

Forty years ago today, Jim Morrison died at the age of 27 -- and broke on through to the other side.

The Doors singer's body was discovered by his girlfriend, Pamela Courson, in a bathtub in his Paris apartment on July, 3 1971.

Persuant to French law, no autopsy was performed on Morrison because foul play was not suspected -- and that only added to the mystery surrounding his death.

After returning to the U.S., Courson told Danny Sugerman, the manager of The Doors, that Morrison had died of a heroin overdose after ingesting what he thought was cocaine. Later, Sugerman says Courson, a heroin addict herself, changed her story a number of times, and even admitted she had killed Morrison.

Twenty years after Morrison's death, friends Alain Ronay and Agnes Varda broke their silence and gave their account of what happened that day.

The two admitted that when they arrived at Morrison's apartment, Courson told them that they had both taken heroin after a night of drinking, and Morrison began coughing so badly, he was vomiting blood. When he seemed better, she went to sleep. But when she awoke a short time later, she found him in the bath unresponsive and called for help.

Other conspiracy theories include that Morrison overdosed in a bathroom at Paris’ Rock 'n' Roll Circus nightclub, and was then dumped in his bathtub by two drug dealers.

Morrison's body is buried in the Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, and has become one of the city's most-visited tourist attractions.

Three years after Morrison's death, Courson overdosed on heroin in California.

Morrison formed The Doors in 1965 with Ray Manzarek, John Densmore and Robby Krieger. Until his death, they released six studio albums together and scored hits with "Break on Through (To the Other Side)," "Light My Fire," "Hello, I Love You" and "Riders on the Storm."

Just where is it confirmed that any doctor made any statement to anyone about the state of Jim's health before he left for Paris?  Doctors don't discuss their patients with anyone, especially members of the press.  Pam has said that she took Jim to doctors in Paris because she was alarmed about all the coughing and upper respiratory issues, which doesn't indicate that he was in "excellent health," at least not to me.

P.S.  The first link is not working, TS.

Hi Mews, happy 4th,even though our independence is from your mother ship,i'm sure the Brits are celebrating not having to be associated with us currently. That 1st link worked for me,maybe it was messed up yesterday, really nothing new or refreshing in any of these articles, although I did notice in the Doors visititation articles to the grave a deliberate non mention of John Densmore, which is a glaring error by publicists because it really makes him that more important, truly is an odd day to celebrate ones life, almost like celebrating a friends suicide.
Mews,I see there is some idea that JM was healthy going to Paris,I read and maybe I'm misinformed that shortly before he split he was treated for coughing up blood, that hardly would pass for in good health. What i find amusing about all these conspiracy theories on the strange death of JM is that nairy a one mentions he may have plainly drank himself to death, much like Gram Parsons, after all alcoholics often die from heart attacks, blood clots and internal bleeding,or hemmoraging, boredom strikes me when i regurgitate this subject,so I'll bid you adew and wish you a fine day in the city of the fallen angel, our celebrated and often tragic town,Los Angeles.T
